Who do you follow? (John 5:39-47)

WHO DO YOU FOLLLOW? (John 5:39-47)

Let me begin by asking you a question?
Who or what do you follow?
Are you a stickler for the Word or is your life governed by Jesus Christ?

There can be a big difference between the two.
Yes, the Word of God is infalable, complete, But…
It’s very easy to be so intense about a single word or phrase from scripture,
That we miss what Jesus or even the O.T. prophets were really saying!

John 5:39-47 (New International Version)

39You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, 40yet you refuse to come to me to have life.

41"I do not accept praise from men, 42but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts. 43I have come in my Father's name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. 44How can you believe if you accept praise from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God?

45"But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom your hopes are set. 46If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. 47But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?"

The Pharissees studied scripture all the time, But,
They didn’t recognise Jesus at all.
Jesus here in this passage is challenging them and there hardened hearts,
knowing God’s word without the gift of love and loving people will, over time become regimental, full of knowledge for knowledge sake
end up arrogant, selfish and unable to think outside of the box.

Many jewish leaders studied scripture in minute detail.
They had reverance for the Word but they missed it, they missed the point, when the very Word Himself stood among them.
How can that be? Hind sight is a wonderful thing, isn’t it?

We have the opportunity with hind sight to learn from their mistakes….. What mistakes?
To seek the praise of others, to look good, seem real clever, be a know it all.
We’ve all met them haven’t we?

What’s the use in being able to quote scripture all day long, If in our own lives we can’t even manage to live out a single verse of it.
What’s the value in that?  NONE, right?

Not only will we be miserable but we’ll make everyone else’s lives miserable too!!!

Martin Luther - Romans 1:17 "The righteous will live by faith!”
( 1 Cor 13:13 ) –When the bible is no longer needed what will be left? Faith, Hope, Love…
So, it might be wise to not only know our bible but know the One it speaks about…
The One who showed us how to love God and others as ourselves!
