When will Jesus Be Enough? - John 6v35
Then Jesus declared,“I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty" (John 6v35)
I went to a conference some time ago and a church planter/evangelist from Texas was speaking, his name was Bob Roberts. He told us his story. He planted a church in Texas that grew to 500 and him and his leaders then felt the Lord was asking them to step out in faith and buy a shopping mall since they were only renting property at this point. They eventually did so and he said, “The church then grew from 500 to 200 in 3 months!” He was angry with God and in his prayers he was shouting at the Lord, “Why is this happening? You tell us to buy a mall then the church is falling away and soon there will be no-one left!” All of a sudden, he felt the Lord answering him, “ Bob, when will Jesus be enough for you?” This took Bob by surprise but it made him think how true those words were for him. Was he truly wanting to build the church for God or for himself? Ultimately, who’s responsibilty was it to build the church, his or the Lord’s?
From that day forward Bob made up his mind that whether the church grew or folded, he would follow Jesus wherever He would lead him. Even if there was only him and his family left, Jesus would be enough for him.
What are you going through today that might make you angry at God? Everything we have is from the Lord. Our food, finances, friendships. It’s important that we look to Jesus Christ to sustain us in the bad times as well as the good. Jesus said, “I am the bread of life.” This literally means, He is the one who gives us life. He is the One who will sustain us through it all good, bad and indifferent.
Remember this too - It’s ok to shout at God, many of the prophets did the same. God has broad shoulders but be ready for when He whispers gently, lovingly to you, “My child, when will Jesus be enough?”
As a Christian, whatever we seek to build it should always be for His Kingdom and not our own.
I was so touched by the full story that Bob Roberts shared, I just had to write a song about it. Below are the words to the chorus.
We say we’ve been broken hearted, touched by God’s right hand.
But we just keep on doing stuff, keep building on the sand.
And all the while the Son of God is asking for my life, my all,
I stand before His empty cross, it’s bloodied and it’s so rough,
And I can hear the Saviour whisper gently to my heart,
“ When will I be enough?”
